I didn't have such guidance from parents or teachers, either. I had to deal with peers in school, and I wasn't good at it. Adults should teach children how the "real world" will work, because they understand it from experience, and children do not. Parents and teachers have both of those things. They have no commitment to other children. Those children have no experience in the "real world" (the fact that school is somehow separate from the "real world" is a problem in and of itself but that's another issue).

The "real" world is uncomfortable, therefore we should make kids uncomfortable so that they'll be able to handle an uncomfortable life, rather than, you know, teaching people social skills and compassion for others? Of course we should teach children how to handle bad situations, but do you think awkward kids are becoming Stoics or something by being around kids no less awkward than them?
